Scuffles break out during Mubarak trial

He began the year as Egypt's president - and one of the Arab world's most powerful men.<br /><br />On Wednesday, Hosni Mubarak went on trial for murder and corruption, just months after the revolution that ended his 30 years in power.<br /><br />The former leader was wheeled into a courtroom on a hospital bed. <br /><br />Along with his interior minister, Mubarak is accused of conspiring to kill anti-government protesters and stealing millions of dollars from the state.<br /><br />His sons Alaa and Gamal are also on trial for corruption.<br /><br />Outside the police academy, Mubarak's backers and opponents threw stones at each other.<br /><br />The clashes flared before, during and after the trial appearance. <br /><br />Around 3,000 police were drafted in to maintain security.
