Tens of thousands of people live with mine injuries, many of them sustained long after conflicts are over and some while trying to deactivate the explosives.<br /><br />Domingo Huiguan, a Peruvian de-miner, tells Al Jazeera about the accident that left him severely disabled.<br /><br />The mine he was trying to deactivate had been planted to deter armed groups from attacking electricity pipelines in the countryside.<br /><br />Landmines caused about 5,200 casualties around the world last year alone.
