Car manufacturers are scrambling to adapt in order to survive the recession, as customers stop spending. <br /><br />By the first quarter of 2009, car sales across Europe had plummeted by more than 17 per cent compared with a year earlier. <br /><br />Now many carmakers are looking to tackle the electric car market to harness new customers.<br /><br />David Chater reports from the international car show in Frankfurt, Germany.
