Dominique de Villepin, France's former prime minister, has appeared in court to defend himself against charges that he tried to implicate Nicolas Sarkozy, the president, in a corruption case.<br /><br />He told a Paris court on Wednesday that he did not know that a list of names, including Sarkozys, allegedly tied to corrupt bank accounts, was fake.<br /><br />If convicted, he faces up to five years in jail and a 45,000 euro ($66,000) fine.<br /><br />Emma Hayward reports.
