More than 130 people were killed trying to cross the border of East and West Berlin between 1961 and 1989.<br /><br />It was a difficult time, not just for civilians, but also for border guards who were conflicted about their roles.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's David Chater spoke with an East German guard who fled and became part of a refugee organisation that helped 350 people escape to safety in West Germany.
