Britain's government has rejected calls by the European Commission to cut its budget deficit. <br /><br />According to a leaked report due to be released on Wednesday, the EC will warn that the UK is failing to reduce its debt in line with European Union standards. <br /><br />The announcement is likely to further damage the popularity of Gordon Brown, the British prime minister ahead of elections expected to be held in May.<br /><br />Laurence Lee reports
