Syrian filmmaker Bassel Shehade was determined to document the violence in Homs. He was killed there earlier this week -- reportedly by shelling from government forces. His friends are mourning a man they describe as extraordinarly brave.

SOUNDBITE: Unidentified friend of Bassel Shehade saying:

"He was not afraid of anything, wherever there were clashes, you would find him, he was the first one there, he was a video journalist, he was not armed and he was the first to go, he was Christian and we are Muslims but he was a brother to us, there was no difference between us, we were brothers."

At the house where he was staying, his friends say the fearless cameraman also made a habit of feeding stray kittens twice a day.

Shehade was on a Fulbright scholarship in the in the U.S. when the uprising in his country began ---- but returned to Syria earlier this year, to tell the story and to teach opposition members to use cameras.

Three other activists were killed together with Shehada and one person was treated in hospital for injuries.

Deborah Gembara, Reuters.
