Germany was one of the first countries in Europe to endorse a common currency for much of the continent, but recent debt troubles in Greece, Spain and Portugal have weakened the euro.<br /><br />Now Europe's biggest economy is bracing for its own spending cuts, prompting some German towns to find their own symbolic alternatives to the euro.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Stephen Cole reports from the town of Witzenhausen.<br /><br />July 5, 2010
