Video asia-pacific<br />Ending impunity in the Philippines<br /><br />For years, many in the Philippines have had a deep-seated mistrust of the police and military, with members believed to be involved in instances of enforced disappearances and what are known here as extra-judicial killings.<br /><br />Benigno Aquino III, the new Philippine president, came to power with promises of a new respect for human rights and an end to corruption.<br /><br />But the country's human rights watchdog says in the first two weeks of his presidency, six people were killed in incidents connected with the Philippine army and the police.<br /><br />Authorities insist they are making a serious effort to end the culture of impunity.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports.
