Competition for scarce resources, such as water and fertile lands, in Sudan's western region of Darfur has led to conflicts that killed more than 300,000 people, according to UN figures.<br /><br />In some parts of Darfur, however, a mix of poverty and lack of development seems to be posing a greater challenge than raging conflicts.<br /><br />Despite the many problems inflicting the region, promises from the international community to support it have gone unfulfilled.<br /><br />There are doubts about whether the Sudanese government can take up development and cure poverty in Darfur on its own.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from Geneina in West Darfur.
