The Palestinian leadership is discussing what it plans to do next after its application for full UN membership ran into trouble.<br /><br />A committee of the United Nations Security Council was divided on whether to back the bid, which now looks very unlikely to succeed.<br /><br />President Mahmoud Abbas, who was treated to a hero's welcome from the United Nations in September, will now try and ensure that this apparent defeat in the UN does not damage the popularity of his Fatah party.<br /><br />Palestine may also continue to push for full statehood recognition in UN agencies, just as it did in UNESCO this month.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports from the West Bank.
