A tragic end to the rescue efforts to save a four-year-old girl.<br/> <br />Indian security forces rush her body into a waiting ambulance and away from a crowd of bystanders.<br/> <br />She was pulled, after 80 hours underground, from this borewell and pronounced dead at a hospital in the northern Haryana state.<br/> <br />One rescue worker described the gruelling conditions.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) A RESCUE WORKER, GURUDEEP, SAYING:<br/> <br />"There was lack of oxygen in the hole. It was also hot inside the hole. Although we could bear the heat but it was difficult work as the hole was very small and we had to crawl to dig a tunnel."<br/> <br />The girl, Mahi, fell into the hole while she was playing on her birthday Wednesday night.<br/> <br />Accidents like this have happened before in India, where children have fallen into uncovered manholes.<br/> <br />One lawmaker said earlier that the government has limited power to regulate drilling of borewells due to the lack of formal complaints lodged with police.<br/> <br />Lindsey Parietti, Reuters
