Pixar has brought to life cars, fish, rats and monsters, but "Brave" is the animated studio's first film built around a feisty female and by the weekend box office results...things look very good.

The animated film, which opened in U.S. theaters on Friday, is the tale of a young, red-headed Scottish archer who decides to defy her mother, break with tradition and do her own thing...which included taking the top spot at the weekend box office charts in the United States and Canada with 66.7 million dollars (USD) in ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday (June 24).

That was good enough to drop another animated adventure, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," to second place with just over 20 million at domestic box offices after two weeks at No. 1.

In the film, the animal pack joins a European traveling circus to try to get back to New York. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer provide voices for the lead characters. The 3D movie cost 145 million to make.

Rounding out the top 3 , the new thriller "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" brought in 16.5 million domestically. The fictionally interesting plot lot has "Honest" Abe fighting off a pack of vampires.

John Russell, Reuters.
