Syrian state television has reported that Israeli troops have shot dead 20 pro-Palestinian protesters at the Golan Heights frontier. <br /><br />The troops opened fire across the demarcation line when protesters marched towards a border fence in the Israeli-occupied area.<br /><br />Sunday's protest was held on "Naksa Day', marking the 44th anniversary of the 1967 war, when Israel occupied the Golan Heights.<br /><br />Mark Regev, the Israeli government spokesman, said soldiers opened fire as a "last resort" after urging protesters not to cross the border.<br /><br />In East Jerusalem and the rest of the Palestinian Territories, there was relative calm. Some minor scuffles took place in the occupied West Bank. <br /><br />Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons reports from East Jerusalem.
