Saudi bans Indonesian and Filipino workers

Saudi Arabia's labour ministry will no longer issue work visas for Indonesians and Filipinos, according to state news.<br /><br />There are more than one million Indonesians and 1.5 million Filippinos working in Saudi Arabia.<br /><br />Jakarta has decided to stop sending workers to the kingdom after the execution of an Indonesia maid in mid-June. <br /><br />Manila has been trying to negotiate assurances of better treatment and wages for its workers.<br /><br />In Saudi Arabia, Filipinos can earn more money than they do at home, but they also know that there are few labour laws to protect them. <br /><br />The money overseas Filipinos workers send home every year is in the billions of dollars. But only a small portion of that comes from domestic helpers. <br /><br />Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Manila.
