Eight people were killed and two injured when a train smashed into a minibus on a crossing in central Poland on Monday.

The minibus carrying 10 people - eight women and two men - drove onto an unguarded crossing near the city of Lodz.

A local policeman said the force of the collision pushed the bus 30 metres down the track.

A local government official said most of the casualties were probably from neighbouring Ukraine, but their identities were still being checked.

One local resident said that trains had been suspended on that route for several months, and many drivers have grown accustomed to driving through the railway crossing without stopping.

In March, 16 people died and 60 others were injured in Poland when two trains collided head-on.

Travis Brecher, Reuters
