Congolese displaced at risk of cholera

A cholera epidemic is putting thousands of lives at risk here in the Democratic Republic of Congo.<br/> <br />Ten people have died in the past week as the disease spreads through camps for the displaced.<br/> <br />Many have fled the conflict between rebels and government forces and are now living in unsanitary conditions.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Kiswahili) DISPLACED WOMAN, JOSEPHINE ZICAMBE, SAYING:<br/> <br />"Our children are getting sick on a daily basis, they are passing loose stools, they don't eat healthy food and there is no water."<br/> <br />The country lacks healthcare infrastructure, and international humanitarian group Doctors without Borders is trying to help with the epidemic.<br/> <br />SOUNDBITE) (French) MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES, DOCTOR CHRISTIAN MASUDI SAYING:<br/> <br />"Its important to note that cholera is a disease that comes from dirty hands so the preventive measures are the measures that are linked to hygiene. Access to drinkable water is imperative as well as many latrines."<br/> <br />Last year alone, the waterborne disease here killed more than 230 people.
