Kurds clash with Turkish police early on Tuesday here in the southeastern province of Hakkari.<br/> <br />The violence comes 28 years to the day since the Kurdistan Workers Party - or PKK - began its armed insurgency against the Turkish state.<br/> <br />Around 150 protesters hurl stones and petrol bombs at security forces, who respond with smoke grenades and water cannon.<br/> <br />Clashes between security forces and the outlawed PKK have risen sharply in recent weeks.<br/> <br />Over the years, one of the world's most protracted insurgencies has left more than 40,000 people dead - most of them Kurds.<br/> <br />The PKK says it is fighting for greater political and cultural rights for Turkey's estimated 15 million ethnic Kurds, scaling back earlier demands for an independent state.
