Turkey's prime minister has been meeting military leaders to appoint new commanders for all the branches of the armed forces.<br /><br />Last week, all four chiefs-of-staff quit after the arrest of dozens of other soldiers for allegedly plotting a coup.<br /><br />Recep Tayyip Erdogan has clashed with the military since he arrived in office in 2002. <br /><br />These vacancies give him the chance to consolidate his control by appointing his own choices into the top positions. <br /><br />The promotions will all be announced on Thursday.<br /><br />Ilter Turan is a professor of politics at Bilgi University in Istanbul. He told Al Jazeera what effect this would have on the Turkish military.
