The Syrian government has been using its military to crush an uprising that began in March.<br /><br />However, Al Jazeera has evidence the army itself is split over the tactics being used against civilians.<br /><br />The defected soldiers say they are now trying to protect peaceful protesters from the government forces and that they are determined to bring down the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports.
