South Koreans stake their claim on a disputed island by playing a game of basketball.<br/> <br />The islands, called Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan, lie equi-distant from the two mainlands. They are believed to contain frozen natural gas deposits potentially worth billions of dollars.<br/> <br />Tension between the North Asian countries, flared earlier this month after South Korean's President became the first South Korean leader to set foot on the islands claimed by both countries.<br/> <br />The Korean Basketball Association adopted a different approach<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) LEE JONG-GUL, PRESIDENT OF KOREA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION, SAYING:<br/> <br />"We are sportsmen, who are protesting in the most peaceful and dignified way. Basketball is a sport as well as a peaceful diplomat. Today, we played the basketball on Dokdo and clearly showed that this is our territory."<br/> <br />The tournament was the second basketball tournament held on the island by South Korea. The previous one was held in August last year.
