Residents situated near Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala, India live in fear that its leaking walls will collapse, unleashing a deadly flood of water.<br /><br />Their fears have been heightened by the release of Dam 999, a film which depicts the breaching of a dam and its disastrous consequences.<br /><br />Frightened residents have begun mobilising protests across villages, towns and cities -- demanding that the government fix the dam before it is too late. Some have even gone on hunger strike.<br /><br />Residents in nearby Timil Nadu, however, are afraid that a new dam will limit their access to the much needed water. <br /><br />Meanwhile, India's Supreme Court has ruled that the Mullaperiyar Dam is structurally sound.<br /><br />It is now be up to the leaders of this region to find a solution that can calm nerves and reduce concerns in the community.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman reports from Kerala.
