Western powers are backing an Arab League demand for the United Nations to resolve the crisis in Syria.<br /><br />Foreign ministers meeting in New York have agreed that President Bashar al-Assad must step down.<br /><br />But there is still opposition to UN involvement from Syria's ally Russia.<br /><br />From New York, Al Jazeera's Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports.
