The first group of 30 United Nations monitors is expected to arrive in Syria shortly, after the security council unanimously approved their mission.<br /><br />Their role will be to check on the ceasefire as part of the peace plan put forward by UN envoy Kofi Annan.<br /><br />The fighting was supposed to stop last Thursday - but activists have reported more violence and more killing.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from the UN headquarters in New York City.
