New York has become the 36th US state to ban what is being called a mounting drug menace across the country. <br /><br />The legislation came as authorities across the US clampdown on synthetic marijuana, now ranked as the most popular narcotic among teenagers after cannabis itself.<br /><br />The cheaper and easily attainable drug, which is packaged under various names including "Herbal Incense", "Spice", or "Spike", has been blamed for a sharp increase in hospital cases.<br /><br />Tom Ackerman reports from Washington DC.
