Former president joins protesters as clashes break out

(ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION)<br/> <br />Maldives security forces charged at protesters led by former leader Mohamed Nasheed on Friday (August 31) in a bid to disperse demonstrators attempting to walk down a road leading to the presidential palace.<br/> <br />Violent clashes broke out when more than 3,000 protesters, joined by Nasheed, marched towards the government building demanding an early election and for the current President Mohamed Waheed to resign.<br/> <br />Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters protested for a second day against a Commonwealth-backed commission report, which found there was no coup earlier this year during a power transition, in which the former leader resigned.<br/> <br />After his resignation on February 7, Nasheed, in power since 2008, said he was forced to resign at gunpoint by mutinying police and soldiers.
