Hong Kong students end hunger strike

A crowd cheers on three Hong Kong students on a 56 hour hunger strike that gained international attention over the weekend.<br/> <br />They are protesting China's decision to implement a new national curriculum celebrating communism and single party rule.<br/> <br />The students say the curriculum is "brainwashing". Beijing says it is intended to engender national pride.<br/> <br />The three ended their hunger strike due to health concerns but one of the students, Lily Wong says others are being inspired to take up the cause.<br/> <br />"We haven't succeeded yet, but we will succeed. More people have come out and continued the hunger strike. That gives me hope," she says.<br/> <br />Fellow hunger striker Ivan Lam adds that the group is hopeful that they will garner enough support to overturn Beijing's decision.<br/> <br />The three had been camped outside Hong Kong's government headquarters since Thursday.<br/> <br />Their hunger strike is the latest backlash against Beijing's political influence since Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
