Clashes as Chileans commemorate Pinochet victims

Clashes in Chile's capital Santiago.<br/> <br />Protesters hurl petrol bombs at security forces, who respond by firing paint balls, water cannon and tear gas.<br/> <br />The violence comes two days ahead of the 39th anniversary of the 1973 coup that toppled the government of Salvador Allende and brought Augusto Pinochet to power.<br/> <br />The masked protesters turned out to commemorate the victims of Pinochet's brutal dictatorship.<br/> <br />The event began as a march from the city's Plaza of Heroes to the main cemetery, and included victims' family members, human rights activists and political and civic organisations.<br/> <br />Pinochet ruled Chile with an iron fist for 17 years.<br/> <br />During his reign more than 3,000 people were killed or disappeared, and an estimated 28,000 people were tortured.<br/> <br />He died in 2006 without facing a full trial for his crimes.
