Venezuela tribe denies Amazon massacre

Deep in the Amazon jungle, officials arrive at a village, investigating reports of a massacre.<br/> <br />The Venezuelan Yanomami tribe are at the centre of claims villagers were shot dead by Brazilian gold miners.<br/> <br />But the tribe appeared surprised by the news.<br/> <br />SOUNDBITE: CHIEF OF THE COMMUNITY IN SIERRA DE PARIMA, MASSUPI, SAYING (Spanish):<br/> <br />"I asked how many they killed and they told me they didn't kill anyone. Here, we are all fine."<br/> <br />One Yanomami group sounded the alarm in August, saying hunters had discovered a massacre.<br/> <br />The government launched an investigation, but repeatedly said it found no evidence.<br/> <br />Rights group Survival International has now retracted a version of events which said miners killed over 70 people.<br/> <br />But the group says doubts still persist and that tension in the area remains high.
