Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi arrives at the White House for a meeting with the U.S. president.<br/> <br />Suu Kyi met Barack Obama for private talks in the Oval Office - a setting usually reserved for visiting heads of state.<br/> <br />The meeting was kept low-key so as to not upset the Myanmar government.<br/> <br />It was the first time the Nobel Peace Prize winners had met.<br/> <br />Earlier, Suu Kyi was awarded the highest civilian honour for her long fight for democracy.<br/> <br />She was presented the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony inside the U.S. Capitol building.<br/> <br />SOUNDBITE: MYANMAR OPPOSITION LEADER, AUNG SAN SUU KYI, SAYING (English):<br/> <br />"From the depths of my heart, I thank you the people of America, and you, their representatives for keeping us in your hearts and minds during the dark years when freedom and justice seemed beyond our reach."<br/> <br />Suu Kyi's visit came as the U.S. removed sanctions blocking any U.S. assets of Myanmar's president and lower house parliament speaker.
