Children of former Peruvian leader seek father's pardon

The children of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori.<br/> <br />They're appealling to President Ollanta Humala for a humanitarian pardon for their father - who has oral cancer.<br/> <br />74-year-old Fujimori is serving a 25-year prison sentence for corruption and human rights crimes.<br/> <br />The case has fuelled debate in congress, where members of Peru's right-wing Fuerza 2011 party are backing the pardon plea.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CONGRESS MEMBER, OCTAVIO SALAZAR, SAYING:<br/> <br />"The basis of the issue is medical, it's the illness that is still with the former president and for us it seems correct that the president of the Republic uses his power to grant a humanitarian pardon."<br/> <br />But Congress member Maria Del Carmen Omonte said a pardon would be controversial and impact on Peru's democracy and reconciliation process.<br/> <br />Fujimori's authoritarian government collapsed in 2000 after a decade in power.<br/> <br />He eventually fled to Chile but was extradited back to Peru in 2007 and sentenced to prison for theft and using death squads to crack down on insurgents.
