Tourists wade in knee-deep water in Venice

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION<br/> <br />Venice was flooded on Sunday (October 28) as a cold front hits parts of Europe.<br/> <br />The famous Venetian landmark of St. Mark's Square was under water on Sunday after the lagoon city flooded after heavy rains.<br/> <br />Some restaurants and shops kept their doors shut but others were determined to serve tourists, who snapped photos as they waded through knee-deep water.<br/> <br />Many had covered their legs and feet with plastic bags or sported thigh-high rubber boots.<br/> <br />Some tourists could be seen carrying their suitcases on their heads or stopping for a sandwich with the water up to their knees.<br/> <br />The water rose to a height of 123cm (50 inches) above sea level on Sunday morning, putting 30 percent of the historic centre under water.<br/> <br />Raised walkways have been set up across the area to help people move around the flooded canal city.<br/> <br />Italy, France and surrounding countries have been hit by bad weather over the weekend, with heavy rain, strong winds and plummeting temperatures as the European winter begins.
