New York's Laguarda airport reopens for business Thursday.

Transportation throughout New York virtually ground to a halt after superstorm Sandy hit the region.

It caused a change of plans for many travelers.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PATRICIA RHODES, PASSENGER, SAYING:

"We came to visit out father for his birthday, a surprise visit, and then it was a surprise stay. Because we were supposed to leave on Sunday and the flights got canceled on Sunday. Kennedy International Airport started limited service on Wednesday.

Between them, the three airports handle 300,000 passengers a day.

Even with airports resuming services, there are few easy ways home for many.

But while the wait may be long, at least for some there is an end in sight.
