Spaniards, Italians react to Obama victory

As Obama clinches the U.S. presidency with a substantial electoral lead, reactions on the streets of Madrid are mixed.<br/> <br />Pausing on his way to work, one Spaniard says he's pleased with the result.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SANTIAGO, A MADRID RESIDENT, SAYING:<br/> <br />"I think it's more in Spain's interest than his rival."<br/> <br />But another says it doesn't make much difference who has the top seat.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ISABEL JANEIRO, MADRID RESIDENT, SAYING:<br/> <br />"As I understand it, the United States will continue its world leadership regardless of whether it's Obama or the Republicans in power."<br/> <br />Meanwhile in Rome, Italians seem to really believe in Obama's promise of change.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) BUSINESSMAN MARIO ALTA, SAYING:<br/> <br />"Obama represents the opposite of what Romney said, Obama is change. It is a change that will come about slowly but it will arrive eventually. Romney is a return to an America of 40-50 years ago, an America that no longer exists."<br/> <br />While the nationwide popular vote was very close, Obama took the presidency with a substantial lead in the Electoral College - well above the 270 votes required to win.
