It looks like a war zone, but this is the Tuscan town of Albinia after floods ripped through it earlier in the week.

Many homes are severely damaged and residents are angry there was no government warning ahead of the deluge.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ALBINIA RESIDENT LOREDANA BONEME, SAYING:

"We haven't saved anything, nothing, nothing. I only just managed to save my mother-in-law in time."

There were no emergency services in the town on Wednesday to help with the clear-up.

Roads remain closed and most residents are without electricity.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ALBINIA RESIDENT, HAIRDRESSER MARCELLO BALDUCCI, SAYING:

"Unfortunately we don't have any help, we're on our own. This is my business, can you see?"

In Rome the mighty Tiber reached close to record levels.

But locals here didn't appear to be fazed. This man says it happens most years and as long as the water is below the bridge arches they'll be safe.

Elsewhere in Italy several people have died after heavy flooding swept through the centre of the country.
