Stem cells are able to multiply and grow into other types making them an ideal 'repair kit' for the body. This year's Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded to two pioneers of stem cell research; the UK's John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka from Japan. Hailed by the Nobel jury for creating new opportunities to study diseases and develop methods for diagnosis and therapy, the two scientists receive their awards from Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf in a ceremony on December 10.VIDEOGRAPHIC
