Solkin is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of the History of Art and Dean and Deputy Director at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London. A leading authority on eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British painting, he was awarded the William MB Berger Prize for the exhibition and catalogue Art on The Line: The Royal Academy Exhibitions at Somerset House 1780-1836 (The Courtauld Gallery, London, 2001-2) and in 2004-5 delivered the Paul Mellon Lectures at The National Gallery, London, and at Yale University (subsequently expanded and published as Painting Out of the Ordinary: Modernity and the Art of Everyday Life in Early Nineteenth-Century Britain [Yale University Press, 2008]). Professor Solkin recently organized the groundbreaking exhibition Turner and the Masters at Tate Britain, London, the Grand Palais, Paris, and the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid (2009-10).
