Egyptians line up to cast their ballots in a landmark referendum on a new - and controversial - constitution.<br/> <br />The ballot is considered a key step in the country's transition to democracy, which has often been rocky.<br/> <br />Deadly clashes marred the lead up to the vote and security was heavy around polling stations.<br/> <br />The new constitution was largely written by the Islamist allies of president Mohamed Mursi, seen here voting early Saturday.<br/> <br />Critics say it doesn't do enough to protect the rights of women and religious minorities.<br/> <br />Many voters, though, think the proposed constitution will help bring stability to the country.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) VOTER SAYING, AHMED GINDY, SAYING:<br/> <br />"It is inevitable that people will disagree on things, but it is a good base that we can start to work."<br/> <br />If constitution is approved, there will be parliamentary elections next year.<br/> <br />If it fails, the drafting process will begin all over again.
