Cyclone leaves destruction in Fiji

The aftermath of a severe cyclone in Fiji, which saw winds of up to 140 miles per hour (230kmh) batter the Pacific nation.<br/> <br />More than 8,000 residents and tourists headed to emergency shelters as the storm hit late on Monday (December 17).<br/> <br />There are no reports of casualties, but in some areas wooden homes and infrastructure are devastated.<br/> <br />Residents here are relieved to be alive, but have been left with little else to be grateful for.<br/> <br />SOUNDBITE: FIJI RESIDENT VONIANA ULUDAI, SAYING (English):<br/> <br />"Most of our crops have been damaged and our houses, most of our houses have collapsed due to this cyclone."<br/> <br />The clean-up began in earnest on Tuesday (December 18), while many villagers who lost homes are still in evacuation centres.<br/> <br />Authorities say government ministers toured the islands by helicopter to assess the damage.<br/> <br />Fiji was the latest victim of Cyclone Evan, which left at least four people dead in Samoa last week.
