Artillery and air strikes have stopped opposition fighters to the east from advancing.<br/> <br />Assad has been battling to crush a 22-month-long revolt.. that has left 60-thousand people dead. While he's lost control of large parts of his country, his forces, backed up by air power, have kept rebels away from the center of Damascus.
