Me playing the organ at St Cuthbert's Church in Carlisle city centre.

As an enthusiast of Compton organs, I am keen to not only play instruments built from scratch by Compton but also those by other builders which were rebuilt and St Cuthbert's contains a good example of this.

The organ here today was originally built in 1904 by Norman & Beard where it replaced an earlier instrument. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1933 by the John Compton Organ Company Ltd. During this rebuild, the choir division was moved from the north chancel and installed in its own enclosed chamber opposite in the south chancel. Unusual for Compton, the console is attached and forms part of the north chancel casework. The specification reads:

PEDAL
Acoustic Bass 32'
Open Wood 16'
Sub Bass 16'
Bourdon 16'
Octave 8'
Flute 8'
Fifteenth 4'
Trombone 16' (from Great)
Double Trumpet 16' (from Swell)
Tromba 8'

CHOIR
Contra Gamba 16'
Lieblich Gedeckt 8'
Dulciana 8'
Suabe Flute 4'
Piccolo 2'
Clarinet 8'
Tromba 8' (from Great)
Octave Tromba 4'
Tremulant

GREAT
Bourdon 16'
Open Diapason 8'
Small Open Diapason 8'
Hohl Flute 8'
Principal 4'
Quint Flute 2.2/3'
Fifteenth 2'
Tromba 8'
Octave Tromba 4'

SWELL
Open Diapason 8'
Rohr Gedeckt 8'
Echo Gamba 8'
Voix Celeste 8'
Principal 4'
Fifteenth 2'
Mixture III
Double Trumpet 16'
Trumpet 8'
Horn 8'
Oboe 8'
Clarion 4'
Tremulant

COUPLERS
Choir to Pedal
Great to Pedal
Swell to Pedal
Choir Sub Octave
Choir Unison Off
Choir Octave
Swell to Choir
Swell Octave to Choir
Choir to Great
Swell Sub Octave to Great
Swell Octave to Great
Swell to Great
Swell Sub Octave
Swell Unison Off
Swell Octave

ACCESSORIES
4 double touch thumb pistons to Choir and Pedal
6 double touch thumb pistons to Great and Pedal
7 double touch thumb pistons to Swell and Pedal
5 toe pistons to Pedal
5 reversible thumb pistons
2 reversible toe pistons
1 thumb piston - great reeds on
1 thumb piston - great reeds off
1 general cancel thumb piston
1 balanced expression pedal with indicator - choir
1 balanced expression pedal with indicator - swell
1 balanced expression pedal with indicator - crescendo
Double touch canceller to each division
5 ventil switches
Voltmeter

As I was in Carlisle I thought I would play the hymn 'Stand up and bless the Lord' to the tune 'Carlisle'.

Many thanks to the church officials for kindly allowing me access to this fine Compton organ.

NOTE: this is purely my interest in order to make sure that these fine organs are archived forever and I do not make any monetary profit by this video being on dailymotion.

For more information on the John Compton Organ Company Ltd and to see me play other Compton organs, please click on the following link for my site dedicated to the John Compton Organ Company Ltd:

http://comptonorgans.yolasite.com/
