The Falklands war under late former British Prime minister Margaret Thatcher started when the Argentina's ruling military junta invaded the Islands.<br /><br />Though British controlled, the islands lie off the Argentine coast in the South Atlantic and the Latin American nation has long claimed sovereignty over them.<br /><br />Britain responded with military force - winning back control of the territory by June 1982.<br /><br />Of the more than 600 Argentines who died in the conflict, 323 perished when their cruiser – the General Belgrano – was torpedoed and sunk by a British nuclear submarine.<br /><br />Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports from Buenos Aires.
