Historians revealed hard evidence that the settlers in the American colony at Jamestown Virginia resorted to cannibalism to survive the harsh winter of 1609.<br/> <br />Researchers said damages to the skull of a 14 year old girl they named "Jane" shows signs that she was dismembered, then eaten.<br/> <br />An account by one of the settlers recalled how they were forced eat their horses, dogs, cats, mice and snakes in order to survive the harsh conditions.<br/> <br />Researchers said Jane was probably not the only case of cannibalism.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (English) JAMES HORN, COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION, SAYING:<br/> <br />"How many of the growing numbers of dead were cannibalized is unknown. But we don't believe Jane was a lone case. Only in the most desperate of circumstances would the English have turned to cannibalism."<br/> <br />It's not known if Jane was murdered or died of natural causes.
