I decided to do this trial because I genuinely wanted to test the quality of this app and only did so because I was assured I would be reminded before I was charged. I was not reminded at all before I was charged and I was charged nearly $200 for a service I will not even use because I did not find it worth the price. I requested several times for a refund and was met with very unsympathetic people who had no perspective on how much money this was and could not even tell me why my request was refused. I never would have done the trial had I known all this. It’s feels so ill intentioned that they refuse to even help.

There is so much that the Pimsleur app and language learning method does right. Moving language from short term to long term memory: I first used the Pimsleur method some 15+ years ago when it was only an audio course that I used for free at my local library. Back then I was learning Chinese and, even though it was so long ago, I can still remember the first words and sentences I learned from the course. Pimsleur uses spaced repetition that really helps people remember words/phrases longer. Just when you’re about to forget a word you learned a few minutes ago, it asks you to recall it again to help it stick. Learning useful language you can confidently use immediately: Now I’m learning Korean and Japanese. On my recent trip to Seoul, I had only gone through 3 (30-minute) lessons in the Pimsleur app but could already understand and respond to some of the questions my taxi driver asked me on the way to the hotel from the airport! Written language in addition to audio: Back when the Pimsleur course was just audio, sometimes I struggled because I learn even faster if I can see the written word. I’m so glad they have added the written element to the app. I can listen to the audio lesson and afterwards review the words and phrases I learned to help solidify and learn them faster. It’s also great for languages that use different alphabets and scripts so you can learn how to pronounce what you see written on signs and menus, etc. Intuitive learning of grammar: As someone who studied linguistics and has learned languages in many different ways, I have come to realize that the best way to learn grammar (at least for beginners) is to let your subconscious mind do the work. If I try to study and memorize which word should come first it’s going to be a long and difficult road. But if I hear repetitive samples of grammatical sentences, my subconscious mind will begin to piece the grammar together. In the Pimsleur app you hear and speak sentences multiple times and then it asks you to form a new sentence you’ve never heard before, but because you’ve heard other similar ones before, you already have an intuitive understanding about which word should come first/last etc. without having to memorize a rule. I know many people will not want to use Pimsleur because of the price, but honestly you get what you pay for and I think it’s worth it.
