I used this app regularly back in college about six years ago, and it was genuinely helpful then. Unfortunately, it's taken a noticeable turn for the worse. The interface has become confusing and restrictive for free users—it's obvious the app is pushing hard for paid subscriptions. One particularly frustrating issue is how the app handles language and location. I'm a native Vietnamese speaker living in the U.S., so I selected Vietnamese as my native language. The app then automatically set my location to Vietnam and switched all the settings to Vietnamese, even though I want the app experience in English. There’s no intuitive way to change this without jumping through hoops. It’s disappointing to see an app that once prioritized user experience now prioritize monetization over accessibility. This used to be a great tool, but it's slowly following the unfortunate path of so many freemium apps—sacrificing usability for profit.
  • Boooooooring and confusing

Tl;dr -if you’re looking for boring chitchat (and very little actual learning and practice) this is your app. If you’re wanting to learn the language, look elsewhere. I’m only here temporarily because I’m having issues with the other app that I normally use. Complicated and confusing user interface. Most of the rooms are SUPER boring. People talking about food, weather, politics, same old boring topics that everyone else talks about. Very little actual language practice and learning. In any given moment, if there are 50 rooms open, MAYBE 1 of them will be educational and for practice. The rest will be boring chitchat. I upgraded just for one month in order to have my time limit removed and for similar reasons. apparently, I have to send several gifts to be able to do private parties, which I don’t intend to do, but it’s pretty lame. In light of how complicated and “busy” this app is, I can’t recommend it to anyone. I’m hoping to only using it temporarily until my account in a different app is fixed. Some people from the other app have temporarily joined me here, and they too, have expressed that they don’t like this app because of how confusing it is, and because they get kicked out of conversations with zero warning upon reaching their time limit, etc. So bottom line, way too busy and complicated, very few helpful rooms, etc. I’m excited to be done with this app. Also, the hosts sometimes remove you for zero reason. Several times now, I’ve entered a room, stayed down below for a few second without saying a word, and the host randomly removes me from the room with zero acknowledgement, zero explanation. Lots of people are here just to waste time chatting with their fellow native speakers about irrelevant topics. In summary, if you’re looking to learn and practice, this app is largely a waste of time. If you want to waste time chatting and debating with random people in your own language about things that don’t and topics that were boring 20 years ago (which accent is better, which language is harder to learn, how’s the weather in your town, what’s your favorite dessert - you know, boring things and boring conversations), then I have good news: this is the app for you! To be fair. Other apps are largely equally worthless. Tandem, for example: largely worthless. Many rooms/parties there are boring chitchat as well, and some of the Featured Parties are taught by unqualified people (like Stefanie, who regularly teaches things in English that aren’t correct.) Seem that finding an app where people actually want to learn is difficult to do.

How can a “language app” have such a garbage translator? It’s almost always not just wrong, it twists the message completely.
  • Awful App and Customer Service

I’m writing this review after having used this app for 5 years on and off and having my account banned for no reason. I had nearly 2k followers and all my hard work and dedication to the app was washed away today this morning. This app is more like a dating app and a social media app than a language learning app. The majority of messages I would receive were dating questions. Most of the “language partners” there weren’t serious. Most of them would either be there for attention or dating. Additionally, it’s a Chinese app so any mention of China will get you banned without a reason. Everything you do on that app is heavily monitored and most things you say are censored. This app is a joke and I’m glad I was banned. Don’t bother downloading this app and try out the plethora of other better apps. HelloTalk is such a joke. EDIT: I made a new account then I was device banned. This app is seriously a joke. I was being harassed by a Chinese woman and moderation banned me instead. App support on this app is useless and doesn’t do anything even after emailing them. They just say something like “you violated community guidelines” in some broken English. Don’t waste your time on HelloTinder. I’ll be sure to make a YouTube video exposing them.
  • PAY FOR EVERYTHING

You need to pay for everything! I am a new user, the app gave me the vip for 3 days, today it's over and i can't even just log into the voice room. Is this normal? I understand that you also need to receive support for your application, but why do such basic things cost a lot of money?
  • Greed ruined yet another app

    By Goodbye HT!!!!
As you can see from the title, greed has touched this app, and as greed ruins everything it literally touches, it has also ruined this once so beautiful app. Very sad to see, but a paywall for talking in voice rooms is and was enough to make someone like me, who would’ve recommended this app to my entire family and friends group, leave this egregiously greedy app. Really tragic and shameful to see. I would’ve thought the people who made this app made it out of love for an academic future where people around the world connect on a basis of having a genuine appreciation for knowledge, world cultures, and linguistics; however, the app’s disgustingly greedy developers, or their shareholders thought it smart to paywall literally EVERYTHING (except the right to breathe while using the app), and I hope it someday bites them in the butts, and understand how they ruined a perfect app with their insatiable lust for money. Goodbye forever HelloTalk.
  • Can’t recommend as it is now.

I’ve been using HT for about a year, and although I’ve been on and off with it, it leaves a lot to be desired. The vast majority of people on this app seem to use it as twitter or a personal blog and not for making new friends and language partners. It’s hard making any connections on this app. Plus, there are too many paid subscriptions and features make it frustrating to use. They’ve even added an AI chat bot feature. Why would I want an AI chat bot when the purpose of the app is to talk to real people??? I don’t see myself using this for much longer…
