  • “Community Course” decision ruined the app

I’ve been a longtime subscriber to Memrise but the recent decision to remove “Community Courses” from the app has left me disappointed and cancelling my subscription as well as finding a new language learning app home. The ability to create and maintain your own courses alongside Memrise’s formal offerings was invaluable in my language learning journey and it was incredibly convenient way to centralize vocabulary and sentences picked up from television, university courses, music, etc.

Bring back community courses/ the ability to make your own flash cards on the app it’s self not on web or at the very least let me access courses I’ve created on the web in the app. This is a real shame.
  • Keep what the community wants, uses, and pays for

I’ve been using Memrise for 6 years, originally starting out with a unique Arabic dialect and then adding Spanish and Italian. Because of this, my classmates and I spent countless hours making community courses to help our learning. The app makes reviewing the course on the go easy. Unfortunately, Memrise announced it will pull the community courses from the app at the end of the month to a URL that “should last until the end of the year”. From my searching it seems like Memrise is pulling the community courses to push its own…which seems like a slap in the face to everyone who has logged so many hours studying and making courses to help others with unique languages. Why would you remove content people create and even pay to use when it’s worked well for so long? I have a feeling Memrise will lose quite a bit of business from those, including myself, who want an app where they can keep their language(s) to review together and not be forced to use a new AI platform. It’s a shame as Memrise has long been at the top of recommendations in college and the military alike. I guess it’s time to find a new app…
  • No personal flashcards/courses

Community courses are gone. I can’t use the app to study my personal flashcards and content anymore. If you need to do this, you’ll have to pick a different app.

After getting me and probably a million other users dependent on their app for reviewing language flashcards, now they tell us they’re kicking community courses off their app and they’ll only be accessible through an inferior website. In other words you can now only use their subscription courses, which are far more limited in range and not nearly as advanced as the decks I’ve been using. Very disappointing. I didn’t want another Duolingo. It’s not just a question of monetization though that’d be annoying enough; even if you pay they won’t allow you to access the old courses, which are the vast majority of this app’s content, via the app, in case that’s not clear. Not cool Memrise!
