Description

After a decade apart, childhood sweethearts reconnect by chance but how many words will it take for them to figure out where it all went wrong? From the New York Times bestselling authors of the “delightful” (Shelf Awareness) The Unhoneymooners.

The story of the heart can never be unwritten.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

There’s a lot of great moments in this book and who doesn’t love a good rekindled romance? But I feel like it just took forever to get to the point and we kept circling the drain before things were revealed. I didn’t even read the end with Elliott’s epilogue I was so over it and he just kind of came off clingy and whiny to me. Could’ve been really good if it had maybe moved along a little more, there was too much fluff that just didn’t add anything.

This story beautifully captures the sweetness of first love and the ache of loss. I loved the world built around Macy and Elliot’s beginnings—the cozy library, Elliot’s warm, bookish family, and their vibrant community. Macy’s emotional journey felt raw and real, shaped by unexpected loss and her struggle to choose safety over vulnerability. Elliot’s unwavering desire to reconnect was moving, and the character development, especially Macy’s, was rich and layered. This book made me feel everything—and I absolutely loved it.

I truly didnt know what to expect. Lets just say this is now my favorite book. How friends turn to lovers and make their way back. But things leading up to it and everything in between is just as important. It shows how to be loved and to be yearned and how much trauma people can endure. 10/10

This book was the best book I’ve read. The way it was written, going from past to present was just so intriguing and I could not put this book down! Made me smile, laugh, and cry. The romance was so beautiful and spicy at times for sure but, there was so much more to this story. I loved every second!
