Description

A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king—while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son—in the first book of a Norse-inspired fantasy romance series from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.

Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband’s back.

Freya’s dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region’s jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son, Bjorn. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: She possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood, which makes her a shield maiden with magic capable of repelling any attack. It was foretold such a magic would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the one who controls the shield maiden’s fate.

Believing he’s destined to rule Skaland as king, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders Bjorn to protect her from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. The greatest test of all, however, may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

First actual book I’ve read since like 10 years ago when I was in high school. I finished it SO fast, I love it so much. My only gripe is that the next one isn’t out yet.

Having spent most of her life hiding her powers, Freya doesn’t get a chance to be happy to finally reveal them when she is traded one horrible husband for another after accidentally revealing them in a supposed fight for the death. Foretold to reunite Skaland, she enters battles and more hardship, all while struggling with an oath, the magic of the gods, and her forbidden feeling towards the son of her new husband. This book was an incredible, action packed ride from start to finish. I can’t even find the words to explain it, it was just that compelling I am still recovering from it while writing this! Freya is a powerful main character, not only blessed by the gods, but fierce even on her own. She somehow remains strong despite all that is thrown at her. Like anyone, she has her weaker moments, which I love, despite her power she is still flawed and angry. The other characters in this book are all fleshed out pretty well in their own ways, even if you don’t care for them, their moments are still enjoyable to read! If you enjoy the viking era and their gods, sexy god blessed men born of fire and fierce and flawed female characters, I highly recommend starting this series! I cannot wait for more! Plus, the cover is stunning! Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the chance to read this thrilling book!
