“Ready for the next Twilight?”—People

Growing up in a ghastly orphanage run by an abusive matron, Nica coped in the only way she could—by retreating to her imagination, where she lived out fantastical stories, especially about the Tearsmith, the man who makes tears, a terrifying figure who forges all the fears that dwell in people’s hearts.

When she’s finally taken in by an adoptive family at seventeen, Nica thinks she’s leaving the group home, its torments, and her prison of otherworldly tales behind her. That is, until Rigela young man raised from birth in the same dreadful orphanagejoins her new family.

Rigel is as mesmerizingly handsome as he is troubled, and he and Nica have a long history of distrust and hostility. But as they come to live together again under one roof, the deep shared trauma of surviving such vicious circumstances sparks something magical, and Nica begins to fall for Rigel’s forbidden love.

Before any relationship can become reality, though, they’ll have to face the darkness of their past  . . . and the dangerous stakes of pursuing a future together.

Such a great slow burn romance. Beautifully written.

This is not your typical dark romance read. I actually stumbled across the movie on Netflix first… I really enjoyed it; the acting was incredible, especially the character of Rigel, and the story really drew me in. I saw it was a book adaptation, so looked it up. I heard the book was even better, and after reading it over the past 24 hours, I have to agree. This is a tale of brokenness, complexity, and the truest sort of love. I wish they had chosen to adapt this into a series, rather than a movie, because the full story is far better, and more important, than the abbreviated one they ended up telling. It could have been told in a limited series or even stretched into a 2 or 3 season show, and I feel Netflix did themselves, the author, and their audience a disservice by butchering the full story. If you love dark romance, a slow burn, some spice, and incredible storytelling of a beautifully tragic, complicated love, then this book is for you. I can’t stop recommending it to all my friends! I just finished it and already want to read it again… I hope her other books get translated so I can read those as well!

it was poetic. beautiful. some parts that made me upset was the fact that nica still had will in her life and didnt learn from the situation with lionel and the adeline and rigel part whatever happened between them was just not okay it did not make sense and was annoying and should have never been put in this book everything else though was great !
