It's time to decide: save the realm or settle old scores?
Their quest to find the Songmaker having ended in spectacular failure, Rovann and Maegwin find themselves ensnared in a tangled web of their own making. Rovann's ill-fated decisions have led him into a trap, while Maegwin has made the unthinkable choice to align herself with their enemies.
With the rebel army marching on the capital, Rovann faces a terrible choice. Should he sacrifice the lives of the thousands who live there to save the millions who don't? Or should he turn his back on them all and give in to his thirst for vengeance against the woman who betrayed him?
Maegwin, now the Songmaker's general, at long last stands on the cusp of the vengeance she sought all along. Yet it doesn't feel like it should. Instead of elation, she feels only emptiness. Surely this is what she wanted? Surely this is her destiny? Isn't it?
